12/07/2008 – Matthew 1:21- Series: What’s in a Name - Jesus: Yahweh Saves

Shakespeare famously asked in the play Romeo and Juliet:
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."

As we look at the Christmas story together this Advent Season we will hear many names given to the child laid in the manger. What do we learn from those different names?

Today we will consider the name Jesus

  • Next week, Dec. 14 – Immanuel (God with Us)

  • Dec. 21 - King of Kings

  • Christmas eve, Dec. 24 we will briefly reflect upon the name child

  • And the Sunday after Christmas, Dec. 28, the name light

Evangelist Billy Sunday said, "There are two hundred and fifty-six names given in the Bible for the Lord Jesus Christ, and I suppose this was because He was infinitely beyond all that any one name could express."

Each name or title revealed in the Christmas account tells us part of His story. Each is another piece fitting together as a puzzle – revealing to us the bigger picture of who He is.

Of any name or title bestowed upon Him, today’s name - His given name - Jesus is the most famous and is also the most profound revelation of His identity and His mission.
